It was previously known as Buckingham, it once shared a "common usage" name of Waverley with East Cannington, and has one of the oldest and most well respected primary schools in Western Australia.

Beckenham has its own train station but is also close to Cannington and Queens Park stations. There are also bus routes that travel through Beckenham and many routes that can be caught from that Cannington Station.

Beckenham is a suburb that encompasses people from all walks of life and cultures including retirees, young families, investors, renters and first home owners. It is an older suburb which features properties on larger blocks, which means there has been a positive shift in recent times of people developing their properties and strong investor interest in the suburb.
